Konsep Karya

Most of Teguh Ostenrik s work develop from his concern for the environment and his respect for nature. Starting from his love of art and the sea, his passion for diving encouraged his desire to create underwater installation . He started a project he called "ARTificial Reef" in 2013. Since then, Teguh has created eight metal sculptures which he then submerged in several water areas across Nusantara. In collaboration with a number of marine biologists and coral reef caretakers, he designed his sculptures specifically as a medium for growing coral. Having been submerged in the ocean for several years, the sculptures are proven to be effective as they have turn into habitats or dwellings (domus), not only for coral, but also various other types of marine life. Daun Khatulistiwa (The Equatorial Leaf) or Domus Frosiquilo presented in this exhibition is Teguh s ninth ARTificial reef, which is planned to be plunged into the coastal area of Jikomalamo, Ternate, North Maluku. Resembling the shape of a dome, the sculpture is built from iron construction modules whose basic shape is developed from the anatomy of a Teak leaves (Tectona grandis). Both coral and leaves make a major contribution to life on earth, namely as a producer of oxygen that we breathe. Indonesia s geographical location on the equator provides various advantages for biodiversity. The year-round warmth of the region supports the fertility of land plants and coral reefs in the sea. For Teguh, this project is just a small effort to lay the groundwork for art that contributes directly to the conservation of nature.
