Telinga Berbulu

2 panels, each 153 x 122 cm | Nylon cable tie on expanded metal

2017

Concept

The artwork ‘Telinga Berbulu’ (Hairy Ears) is a visual representation of a Malay catchphrase, which literally translates in English as hairy ears. The catchphrase ‘telinga berbulu’ is best described as being extremely irritated of something or someone. It can be defined as nauseated from all the lies that were told. The artist used a cable tie on a grilled steel frame portraying an image of a pair of an ear.

The artist tries to express his displeasure and dissatisfaction towards local politicians who are untrustworthy, rather than helping the people who elected them in the first place. The artwork can be perceived as a form of criticism of dishonest politicians who do their best to elude from responding to the people. In order to cover up their wrongdoings, they manipulate them by giving completely unrelated and irrelevant answers pertaining to matters of the nation. In the end, the people simply want the truth. Hence, Telinga Berbulu’ is an expression of the artist towards the local political scenario.
