Binds & Blinds

variable dimensions | Print (600 navels of Indonesian Inhabitans) on wood-3 dresses
2017

Konsep Karya
I create the work ‘Binds and Blinds’ by collecting around 600 selfies of navels from people throughout Indonesia. They have sent me those navel images anonymous after a call via facebook, whatsapp and media partner Detik.com.  This work reflects on my concern of intolerance in which people like to rule others by imposing moral values. Morality binds but also blinds. We need to go inward looking or go ‘navel gazing’, in order to positioning ourselves and using common sense. This could leads us hopefully back to a default state of humanity, where values are perpetually renewed.
